Kosher Theatresports

Kosher Theatresports – the Jewish comedy-themed spin-off from the popular impro game show – is back!

After a 3 year break, the hit show returns to its Bondi Pavilion Theatre home for its 8th season on Sunday 19 Feb at 7pm.

It’s part of SURF’S UP @ THE PAV – a sizzling, summer series of special one-off performance, music, talks, film and art events that will keep the summer vibe alive down at the Bondi Pavilion Theatre and bar across February.

Accordingly, Kosher Theatresports this year is sub-titled “Surfin’ Safari on the Chai Seas” (a pun on the Yiddish/Hebrew word for ‘life’ and the lucky Jewish number 18).

Producer and originator Geoff Sirmai – who is also an original performer and director of the mainstream version of the show – says it’s a genuine case of ‘back by popular demand’!

“Audiences and performers have been hassling me to bring it back… but when even Bondi Council called recently and said “Nu?” – or words to that effect – I knew it was time.

“Teams will be beach-themed, dress accordingly – and how easy is that? Surf lifesavers already wear red and yellow yarmulkahs!”

Sirmai first produced Kosher Theatresports as part of Sydney’s inaugural Jewish Arts Festival. It has been a vehicle for communal comics, student revue alumni and celebrity guests ever since, featuring stars like Libbi Gorr, Bianca Dye, Gabby Milgate, Joanna Weinberg, Dave Bloustien and Benny Davis from The Axis of Aweseome.

Celebrity judges to ‘dai-dai-dai for’ have included Don Lane, Osher Gunsberg, Lior, Monica Trapaga, Larry Emdur, Playschool’s Benita Collings, Tara Moss, Wil Anderson, Umbilical Brother David Collins among dozens more.

Past winners are a ‘whose Jew?’ of the comedy scene with teams like the legendary Shmux in Tux, Shiksa Envy, Rabbi-proof Fence, Six Nachas, Yentl as Anything and the Maccabi Divas all strutting their stuff, in a magical mix of wits and shvitz (sweat).

Celebrity judges already confirmed include Sydney-born, now international stage director Tanya Goldberg and Theatresports doyen Lyn Pierse.

A number of past stars are expected to return to the scene of former glories along with current ‘pros’ from the Theatresports mainstage and some new young talent direct from the highly successful schools competition.
