“As Actors…” – Manila is a cross-genre mockumentary written and performed by Sydney
creatives Hugo Chiarella and Tamlyn Henderson. Primarily a comedy, “As Actors…” – Manila combines documentary style footage with completely fictionalised characters and scenes in the vein of shows like Borat, Nathan For You, and The Trip.
The setting is Manila, Phillipines. The backdrop is an International touring production of a major musical (Les Miserables) featuring a cast from all over the world. Much of the comedy revolves around the self-serious actors and insular bubble that they exist in.
The Plot: Hugo and Tamlyn, two middling actors from Australia, are trying, very ineptly, to document what it’s like being an actor in a professional production of Les Miserables in Manila, Phillipines. In their travels they experience a live holy week crucifixion , a bustling flea market, the red light district, midget boxing, the Manila transport system, exotic local cuisine, cast interviews, album launches, fashion shoots, but they always somehow bring it back to their sacred craft of acting.
It’s a story about friendship, ego, travel, the entertainment industry and a satirical take on the western, and particularly Australian, relationship with Asian culture.
They have released a sneak peek clip before the launch of the series in March. This very funny clip is their attempt to interview Simon Gleeson. Facebook like is here.
