A one-woman play written for acclaimed, award winning actor Noni Hazlehurst,
If you only see one piece of drama this year, make sure it is here at The Joan in October. Mother is a story and a performance not to be missed, featuring one of our local region’s most loved performers.
“I said I was a good mother. They said I was a bad mother. I didn’t know what they meant.”
A one-woman play written for acclaimed, award winning actor Noni Hazlehurst, Mother is the newest work from the ‘dangerous’ playwright Daniel Keene directed by his long-time collaborator Matt Scholten.
Mother is a fictional story based on the writings of famous Australian writer Dorothy Hewett and the ancient Greek play Medea. Mother is a uniquely Australian piece of theatre that honestly tackles the issues of motherhood, poverty and isolation. The combination of powerful script writing, tender direction and Noni’s magnetising performance make for a surprisingly touching and insightful night of intimate theatre.
Christie is a homeless, aging woman, living on the outskirts of suburbia. She is something of a celebrity, attracting the curiosity of the locals, she’s not shy of an audience and amuses herself with telling anyone who will listen to the story of her colourful, troubled life.
One of Australia’s leading actresses, Noni Hazlehurst has received two Logies as well as four AFI Awards for her prolific television and film work.
Please note that due to the intimate nature of the performance, Mother has a strict lockout policy. No one will be admitted after the performance has begun, so please be on time!
