2016 will mark the first ever Burlesque Idol Australia Grand Final. The state winners from around Australia will compete on the 17th of September at The Abbey in Canberra for the National title….and this year, Sydney will be represented by Hannah Raven Smith…aka Hannie Raegan.
“For me, Burlesque has always been the opportunity to create characters and tell stories. I’ve never looked at myself as an actor AND Burlesque artist…they are one in the same, not mutually exclusive. Burlesque Idol embraces performers for what they do best. There are very few guidelines or restrictions on what you can bring to the stage. Performers are encouraged to present a routine that best showcases their own unique style. That’s what I’ve loved about being involved with Idol this year. I’ve had a fantastic year since winning the Sydney title. I’ve performed in Canada and New York, and posed for a Burlesque photo shoot in Vegas, Nevada with world renowned photographer, Pearl Davis. I’ll also be teaching a Comedy Burlesque Workshop in Canberra on the 18th of September. I’m very much looking forward to competing for the national title this weekend and working with all the fabulously talented state winners.”
Created to help support emerging talent, Burlesque Idol is a high-energy and deliciously entertaining evening, jam packed with talent, humor and audience participation. Every show features a dazzling array of rising burlesque talents, a comedian host and a panel of judges comprised of burlesque promoters, producers, and world-renowned burlesque artists.
History of the Show
Burlesque Idol was founded by Lola LaBelle in 2010 in London, where it continues to run in the city’s prestigious West End under the creative direction of Miss Tempest’s Rose’s House of Burlesque. With 6 years in London, shows in New York City, Boston, Los Angeles (and psst! a national US tour in 2016 afoot), and now a third national tour of Australia, Idol is pleased to be amongst the world’s largest burlesque competitions, and the most international.
