Throwing Shade Theatre Company presents DISCO PIGS by Enda Walsh
Two friends set out to celebrate their seventeenth birthdays in a city lost in dance and pounding rave rhythms. Pig and Runt are two inseparable, violent creatures, who have developed their own language from birth. This night, everything will change, and which one will survive depends on which one can break free.
Pig and Runt were born at the same hospital at nearly the same time and grow up next door to each other. With a bond stronger than friendship or family, they live in a world of their own. As their seventeenth birthdays draw closer, Pig’s violent nature becomes more obvious and his romantic intentions towards Runt emerge. Runt, however, does not want to give Pig what he wants of her. She does not know how to reject him and continues her friendship, feeling caged, with no hope of escape…
Disco Pigs, produced by Throwing Shade Theatre Company (Metamorphosis, No Exit) returns to the Sydney stage as part of the Sydney Fringe Festival from Tuesday 20th September. Directed by Andrew Langcake, Disco Pigs stars Jeff Hampson (A Midsummer Night’s Dream, No Exit) and Courtney Powell (A Bright Room Called Day, 4.48 Psychosis).
“This show kicks ass!” says director Andrew Langcake. “I’m thrilled to be bringing this production back to the stage; Courtney and Jeff bring so much energy and raw emotion to their performances and the story unfolds at such a breakneck pace you’ll be left with a mixture of elation and exhaustion when the curtains close!”
Reviews of our first run:
“This is a play that more should see, and more should ponder.” – Carol Wimmer, Stage Whispers “
If this show comes back to the stage, make sure you get a ticket.” – Joy Minter, The Buzz from Sydney
“Make it part of your festival activities quick smart!” – Lisa Thatcher, author and critic
About the Play:
Enda Walsh’s breakthrough play – a cult hit about two teenagers raging against small-town mediocrity – premiered in Cork in 1996, played the Dublin Theatre Festival and had its UK premiere at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh in 1997, transferring to the Bush Theatre, London.
“If you could take the essence of adolescence, a concentrate of aggression, sexual impulse and hyperactive energy, and reconstitute it in theatrical form, it would look a lot like Disco Pigs.” – Herald.
“Not since The Clockwork Orange have we been so riveted by teenage creations as disturbingly magnetic as Pig and Runt…. Scintillating…” – Guardian.
“Poignantly funny, full of sound and movement, this electric two-hander is phenomenal” – Sunday Times
