Do things really fall from the sky? Fish? Boots? Satellites? Robin believes they do and thinks he is alone, until he finds Jacqui online and realises they share an uncommon fear. The young keraunothnetophobes embark on a relationship, despite the fact they are too scared to leave the safety of their own homes. Will they summon the courage to venture out and cement their love? Or will the sky fall in?
A HISTORY OF FALLING THINGS is a beautifully realised comedy about love, fear, modern technology, frustrated parents and, er, satellites.
Director Nicole Buffoni has assembled a great cast for this production. Nikki has previously directed Ladies in Lavender (2015) and A Picasso (2012) for Ensemble Theatre. She says “It’s a romantic comedy, it will make you laugh and make you cry. It’s modern but with all the heart and love you come to expect when you see a play at the Ensemble.” Following an extensive audition process Eric Beecroft (Ensemble’s The Glass Menagerie and The Anzac Project) was cast as Robin to play opposite Sophie Hensser (Ch 9’s Love Child) as Jacqui. Merridy Eastman (Packed To The Rafters, Playschool, Always Greener) plays Robin’s mum Lesley, and Brian Meegan (Ensemble’s Absent Friends, Neighbourhood Watch, Frankenstein, Becky Shaw, Skylight, The Act, My Wonderful Day) plays Jacqui’s dad Reece, with Sam O’Sullivan (Ensemble’s My Zinc Bed) as Jimmy, a courier.
A History of Falling Things by young Welsh playwright James Graham premiered in Cymru, Wales in 2009 and has enjoyed seasons around the UK and on Broadway. Ensemble Theatre’s production is it’s Australian Premiere.
“A gentle, heart-gladdening love story that’s warmly told.”
“Lucid, light and utterly charming ……endlessly warm and funny.”
“An enormously entertaining, heart-warming and funny play.”
